All of a sudden this error "A USB device has exceeded the power limits of its hub port" appears to your computer screen, and it won't charge your iPhone or iPod to your computer. You turn to the apple community forum or other technology related forums, start asking questions, what happen to your computer USB drive? and people (with good heart) start suggesting you need to check your computer USB ports and the power supplied (500mA) by going to device manager. You don't want to mess with your configuration settings if you don't know anything about it.

Here's a simple trick to check if your USB cable is still working.

Your iPhone/iPad normally comes with a wall connector, use it to check if your device battery will charge. If not, proceed to the next test. If you don't have a wall power connector, proceed to the next test. If you can charge the battery, then something wrong with your computer USB ports (very rare scenario).
Get another iPhone/iPad USB cable and use it to your computer. I recommend that you reboot your computer, before you use the second USB cable. Because if you don't reset it during the pop-up warning, you computer operating system will automatically disable your USB port. After the computer reboot, connect your Apple device, and see if the battery will charge. If you can charge your apple device with other USB cable, then it is safe to assume that your old USB cable need a replacement.

If you find out that your USB cable is the culprit, normally the Apple USB cable is loose where your iPhone/iPad connected to it. This happen over time, when you connect and disconnect your Apple device to the cable. Try pushing it to the left or right, to check if your Apple device battery will charge. It works for my iPhone, when I pushed the USB cable to right (toward my iPhone), and used a rubber band to hold it to charge my battery. Then I stop by to the nearest Apple store and bought a replacement.

Solved: Multisite upload images

I have issue uploading images using a wordpress multisite environment. I've posted this to the Wordpress community and got a superb assistance from lpstenu.

Here's how I started noticing I can't upload any images to other websites in multisite environment:

The forum member "lpstenu" asked mbe to verify my .htaccess and httpd.conf file has "allowoverride" set to all. I verified, and also contacted by web hosting company to re-verify this for me. Another set of eyes, is a good thing.

Then "lpstenu" posted this link (http://codex.wordpress.org/Multisite_Network_Administration#.htaccess_and_Mod_Rewrite) to check my .htaccess configuration.

He directed me to see a samples of .htaccess file for subfolder and subdomain. That's where I found out that something is wrong with my .htaccess file.

Software update for iPhone iPod and iPad

There is a software update available for iPhone/iPad/iPod to version 5.1.
Here’s how to update. Please connect your iPhone or iPad to wireless network and power source before running the update.

In your iPhone/iPad/iPod, go to Settings, General, Software Update, and touch Install.
If you already applied the software update, you will see a message “Your software is up to date”.

This will download the software update, automatically upgrade your iPhone/iPad, and restart. It will take 10-15 minutes to complete the software update.

After the software update, my iPhone now at 4G network, not sure if this will be the same for iPad.

HOWTO setup your BlackBerry phone using your Office 365 email?

My customer is using a Microsoft Online Business Productivity Online Services (BPOS), then transition to Office 365 (latest software as of March 2012). After the upgrade, the user can't read/send email. This is because the e-mail server is different from BPOS to Office 365.

Though setup using Office 365 is a lot easier because of a new autodiscover CNAME added to your company domain name host record.

If you are using Verizon service provider, go to this URL address: http://blackberry.net/go/vzw

Log-in using your username and password.
Delete your existing email configuration.
Setup an Email, select Add an existing email account (e.g. Yahoo, Google, Microsoft Exchange)
Enter your email address and password.

For example:
Email Address: johndoe@whaddya.com
Password: my password

Click Next to continue.
Completed.

The BlackBerry service will send you a message, coming from Activation Server with the email subject of "Email account information".

Here a sample message.
"Congratulation, you have successfully setup johndoe@whaddya.com with your BlackBerry device. You should begin receiving new messages in approximately 20 minutes.

You're good to go. Let me know if this help.

We use Spiceworks for Help Desk to create automatic service ticket when someone send email to our Help Desk email address. After transitioning from BPOS to Office 365, the email didn't work.

To save you some time of troubleshooting, here's how it works.

Before Office 365, I configured my Spiceworks using BPOS (business productivity online services). These services are powered by Microsoft. Here's the old setup.

- The port 587, 995, and 993 (IMAP) must be added to your firewall policy. For this example, I only allow TCP port 587 and 995 for SMTP/POP ports.

Here are some pointers to avoid this phishing techniques, and help you mitigate risk.

Check the FROM email address, the normal technique is hiding (spoofing) their identity using the real company email as a display. DO NOT reply when you receive a similar email, simply delete the message.
It comes a URL link to click, advising you to verify your account information. When you hover your mouse to the link it will show the actual URL address. In this example, the Gmail Login is pointing to a bogus website http://hfhkuching.org/wp-content/ <-- DO NOT click. What you need to do is close all your Internet browser, open a new one, and visit the "real" URL address e.g. http://www.gmail.com.

In your telephone handset, dial *72 wait for dial-tone (stutter) sound, dial the forwarding number, then hang-up. For example dial *72 wait for the sound 703xxxyyyy
Test, calling the number if forwarding is working.
To cancel forwarding, dial *73

I did this method to forward a fax machine number to a new fax number, because we want to keep our old fax number. Easy fix and it works.

Kalibo, the capital town of Aklan, is the gateway to Boracay. Every second weekend of January, it celebrates the Ati-Atihan Festival where frenzied streetdancing is performed by costumed and black-sooted "tribes" as they wend through the main streets from dawn till the witching hours.

The Ati-Atihan is celebrated for three days and commemorates the 13th-century land deal between 10 migrating Bornean chieftains and the aboriginal Ati King Marikudo. It also honors the town patron, the infant Santo Niño. To the accompaniment of hundreds of lyres and drums, merrymakers throw all inhibitions to the wind as they join the tribes in a mad jig punctuated by rhythmic shouts of: "Hala bira! Puera pasma! Hala bira! Viva Santo Niño!" (Loosely translated, means: "Let go! Don't get sick! Let go! Hail the Holy Child!") Kalibo is also famous for its handloom weaving industry where fine silken fabrics are produced from the fibers of the piña (pineapple) and abaca plants.

Island Flavors
The taste of the region is simple with charbroiled chicken as common fare. Another favorite dish is raw fish marinated in spicy vinegar. Dining, however, is no problem in Boracay with most resorts having their own restaurants that serve both Filipino and international cuisines. Small snack bars and fastfood outlets line the island.

My iPhone using iOS 5.0

I'm so excited today hoping to received my iPhone 4S. That excitement shoot down when I find out that Best Buy doesn't have my preordered iPhone 4S 64GB Black model on time.

Instead, I decided to upgrade my iPad to the latest released of iOS 5.0.

My current iOS version is 4.3.1, so I have to upgrade first to 4.3.5, then run the Update.

Upgrading iOS from 4.3.1 to 4.3.5 took a while, more than one hour from running the backup of my entire iPad contents e.g. pictures, video, and apps.

The iOS 5.0 requires iTunes 10.5, so I have to download and install it. It takes 10-15 minutes to updates. And another 30-45 minutes downloading files, depending on your internet speed.

I restarted my MacBook Pro as required by the program, then enjoy iOS 5.0 on my iPad.

Next, my iPhone 3GS upgrading for iOS 5.0.

Update:
My iPhone 3GS is now upgraded to iOS 5.0. One nice feature of iOS 5.0, I can run "Software Update" directly from my iPhone. This feature remove the dependency to my MacBook Pro for next software update.

And, I can use the "iTunes Wi-Fi Sync" to automatically sync with iTunes on my computer when my iPhone is plugged in to power and connected to WiFi. I see there is room for improvement, hopefully with their next release of software update. I can simply sync to my iTunes through Wi-Fi or directly through 4G network. Let's wait and see, only time will tell.

Not iPhone 5, but iPhone 4S released

Apple comes short with their announcement today. I'm expecting a new iPhone product called iPhone 5, instead they announce iPhone 4S. It is like giving you a half bake product, same physical design, though comes with powerful processor dual-core A5, 8 megapixel camera, 1080p video recording at 30fps. As consumer, I still prefer to have an iPhone 4S than anything else. Maybe it's time for me to check the Galaxy II smart phone again. What do you think?

Group Messaging

I downloaded a Groupme app today so I can send a group message (group texting) to my kids. Whenever I send them a message, they will instantly receive it and give me updates. I am their Central Command, to get update from everyone and keep them in touch. I'm only using the Group Messaging, though they have added features such as Conference Call, Location, and Photo Sharing.

How to use it?

Download the app from Apple website.
Start a Group, it will send a confirmation message to verify your phone number.
In Setup "How do you want to receive messages?" I selected SMS because I have unlimited text messaging from my mobile service provider AT&T. For Sprint smart phone users, the PUSH should be ok, because it push messages are free and use your data connection. As of writing this post, Sprint data is unlimited.
I keep ON for Save Groups to Contacts, and Off for Sync Contacts. I may change this option if needed in the future.
Put check on "I agree to the Terms of Service and the Privacy Policy". Touch continue.
Finishing up, enter your Full Name, and your Email, then touch Finish. Saving ...

After the setup of Group Messaging, you can start your group texting (conversation) right away.

Start a group, give your group a name. For my example, I used Kids Group Text.
Next, add people to the group. So I touch the (+) sign in my iPhone to add my children mobile number, and including my wife. I have a little bit of technical issue, adding contact from my Address book, but it's work out ok.
Touch Start. This will send a text or invite to each member. This is the part I don't want, I only want to send them group text, and they can send me a text. My option is Cancel or Send. I still touch Send to complete the setup.
Test it ok but Groupme number will show up in your reciepents mobile phone, not your own number. It will be confusing from the them in the beginning.

I had this useful information from AT&T Customer Service today. A very practical approach of saving money using your iPhone overseas.

• Turn Data Roaming Off: Be sure to download and install the latest version of iPhone software from iTunes. By default, the setting for international data roaming will be in the "Off" position.
To turn data roaming “On/Off” tap on Settings - General - Network - Data Roaming.
• Use Wi-Fi Instead of 3G/GPRS/EDGE: Wi-Fi is available in many international airports, hotels, and restaurants to browse the Web or check e-mail.
• Turn Fetch New Data Off: Check e-mail and sync contacts and calendars manually instead of having the data pushed to your iPhone automatically. This way you can control the flow of data coming to your iPhone.
To turn off the Auto-Check functionality tap on Settings - Mail, Contacts, Calendars - Fetch New Data. Change Push to “Off” and select Fetch Manually.
• Reset the Usage Tracker to Zero: When you arrive overseas, access the usage tracker in the general settings menu and select reset statistics. This will enable you to track your estimated data usage.
To reset Usage Tracker to zero, tap on Settings - General - Usage - Reset.
